YOUNG LOVE

She sat alone now, toward the front of the school bus. Her curly blond hair bounced on her shoulder when she scooted close to the window after her girlfriend got off at the last stop. Joey Morgan, sitting behind her a few rows in the middle of the bus, watched her. Every day was like this. He couldn’t stop looking at her: first from behind her seat, then from the window as she walked home on the sidewalk. She possessed an awkward feminine appeal. Her long, lanky limbs were attached to a short torso. When she walked, her head fell to one side and her spine stiffened, producing a rigid, straight-legged, splay-footed gait. The stiffness was forgiven once her curls started bouncing on her shoulders.

With her sitting alone and her stop coming up soon, now was a good time to talk to her. She was a senior, and there were only two weeks of school left. He might never get this chance again. But how could he reach her? There was an uncomfortable distance between them. He couldn’t approach her while the bus was moving and the aisle empty. The troublemakers in the back would fling insults and make a scene because his action would be so bold. They’d probably throw something at him. He had to wait for a stop so that there would be a lot of commotion and bustling in the aisle.

At the stop just before hers, a good crowd rose and slowly moved down the center of the bus. Joey slipped in behind a loudmouth who was barking with someone in the back, and then slid into the empty seat behind the girl. He had made it undetected by the troublemakers. Even the girl hadn’t noticed.

Joey lightly tapped her shoulder and said, “Hi.”

She turned around and expressed a bit of shock at being accosted. When she did not say anything, he started from scratch: “Hi, I’m Joey Morgan. You’ve probably seen me on the bus all year. I’ve seen you and your friend. I just wanted to say hi and meet you before you graduated.”

Her face expressed disbelief, as if she were witnessing a talking dog. She hesitated, making sure his speech was over. Then her face softened, and a gentle smile emerged. She turned slightly to view him more comfortably. Her curls bounced and emitted a sweet perfume.

“That is very nice of you. My name is Cheryl. And my friend is Karen.” She was chewing green gum, and he caught a whiff of mint.

Cheryl’s stop was approaching. Joey had to think quickly since she would be standing to leave.

“Would it be OK if I walked you home?” he asked.

“Oh, that’s not necessary. My house is right there.” She pointed to a small brick ranch only two houses from the bus stop. Joey had seen her enter the house many times.

“I don’t mind. I just want to talk some more.”

“Well … .” Cheryl stood up. “I don’t care.”

Joey stood and looked toward the back of the bus.
